Integrated model explains violent extremism (PHYS.ORG; myscience)

Associate Professor Milan Obaidi of the University of Copenhagen, together with colleagues from Uppsala University, Aarhus University, and the University of Stuttgart, has developed a new model that outlines the intricate psychological and social pathway that drives individuals to violent extremism. According to Obaidi, earlier research on extremist violence was predicated on a simple interpretation that made a clear connection between violent dispositions and adverse socioeconomic environments, such as social inequality. However, according to Milan Obaidi, an unequal socioeconomic context alone is insufficient to explain violent extremism. Violence cannot be adequately explained by the social and physical surroundings. Every person has a unique perspective on their surroundings. And even within the same setting, this impression might differ significantly from person to person.
