There is great promise for the AU Continental AI Strategy to propel innovation and direct policy priorities throughout Africa. It does not, however, include comprehensive security protocols and protections for responsible AI use. More focus should be placed on the growing threat of terrorists using AI for their own purposes, in addition to addressing the risks associated with AI in general. It is crucial to create strong counter-terrorism frameworks that are adapted to AI’s changing role. African states must be mindful of how terrorist organizations may abuse AI to threaten regional stability, according to the AU Peace and Security Council.
