New research shows: Tailored approaches are needed in tackling violent extremism (Tilburg University)

Three motivation profiles—low motivation, morally motivated, and ideologically hardened—are identified by Gaby Thijssen’s PhD research, which examines the varied psychological and social paths of Dutch terrorist perpetrators. Her findings highlight gendered disparities in radicalization and cast doubt on the idea of a homogenous extremist organization. Women are particularly vulnerable because they are frequently motivated by personal issues, pain, and a need for belonging, even though their radicalization is equally severe. The significance of customized preventative tactics, particularly for young people navigating identity formation, and the protective function of social connections are at the heart of Thijssen’s findings. Her writings provide educators, justice professionals, and legislators with helpful advice.
