Left-Wing Terrorism and Political Violence in the United States: What the Data Tells Us (CSIS)

Using empirical data from the CSIS dataset, the current analysis examines the extent and development of left-wing terrorism and political violence in the United States. The survey finds a slight increase in left-wing occurrences, especially those connected to anarchist and environmental organizations, but right-wing extremism continues to pose the greatest threat. Property, not people, has been the focus of the majority of left-wing violence, with large upticks occurring during times of increased political upheaval, such the George Floyd protests. The paper urges for balanced policy responses that address all types of political violence without jeopardizing civil liberties and highlights the significance of differentiating between peaceful action and violent extremism.
