Extremists are targeting young Australians who crave belonging. What can we do? (The Conversation)

According to a new study, young Australians are becoming more susceptible to extremist recruiting, which is motivated by unfulfilled demands for stability and belonging rather than philosophy. Since many young people suffer from trauma, family strife, neglect, and social isolation, radicalization frequently originates in interpersonal connections rather than online forums. The “perfect storm” for extremist activity is created by these overlapping vulnerabilities. Recruiters take advantage of this helplessness by making fictitious claims and promising a community. The study highlights that a whole-of-society approach is required to combat young radicalization, as surveillance alone is insufficient. Preventing extremist influence and promoting disengagement require trauma-informed care, early intervention, and inclusive community participation.
